Sunday Nights

v-for-vendetta-big-ben.jpg

We're all pretty familiar with the picturesque image of a Sunday. It's bright, it's slow, there's usually brunch. Sunday Instagrams usually focus on coffee and the Sunday Times; Sunday coloquialisms consist of slow drivers and breakfast in bed; Sunday conversations are reflections from the week and regrets from Saturday night. Sundays are mellow.

But there's another side to Sundays. Somewhere around 11:30, it always hits. The week is about to be here! A new week! What will I accomplish? What will I learn? Who will I become on this mercurial journey of life? Are these questions dramatic and oddly existential? No, they're just Sunday night musings, don't tell me you don't have them. It's practically reptilian.

I kind of love these Sunday plans though. I start with a list of deadlines and due dates (lest we forget I am still in college), but then I make the fun lists. I list what I want to accomplish in the week ahead, and I don't hold back. I make new playlists and plans with friends, and I think about how I want to change and what I want to work on.

If you think about it, every Sunday is a new chance for new resolutions. I'm a big fan of New Year's resolutions, but like, for 364.75 days it's just the same ones? Really? How often do I really need to remind myself to take the stairs or wash my produce before I eat it? (Actually, that produce one's been tough.)

-------

Either way, this week I'm gonna:

1. Work on my paintings

They're for a class, and art for class sucks the fun out and makes it difficult to follow through.

2. Research some festivals for this summer.

I'm deciding between Osheaga in Montreal and Firefly in Delaware...or maybe something else? I take suggestions but let's keep it East Coast oriented.

3. Plan a weekend trip to Green Lakes State Park.

It's less than an hour away but I've never been, and I won't be living in Upstate New York much longer.

4. Break out the Birk's.

The weather is supposed to be beautiful later this week, and I'm about to break out my Birkinstocks. I love that they're back in style (did they ever leave? Kind of no...) and I plan to wear them. With socks if necessary. I don't play.

5. Learn a dance move.

At least one. Practice it, then exhibit it for the expectant masses this weekend. A friend of mine Step Up-level legit and I'm hoping she can take this lanky 6-foot frame and turn it into something fresh. A la Alison Stoner in those Missy videos from yesteryear.

6. Breathe with more awareness.

It's a stressful time of year academically, and it's allergy season. I'm in the process of getting scuba certified, and the number one rule of scuba diving is apparently "Breathe continuously, never hold your breath." I do this thing when I'm stressed or concentrating where my breathing gets really shallow, like I don't want to disturb the stillness of my focus or something. I'm going to work on that this week. If I succeed, I will have caught up to my species in many standards of evolution. What a feat to accomplish!
